The types of ringtones that are available for your cell phone or mobile device are monotones, polytones and realtones.
Monophonic ringtones, or monotones, are simple ringtones that play only one note at a time and are typically generated using the internal synthesizer or tone generator of your mobile device. They offer the widest compatibility with older cell phones and mobile devices with minimal capabilities or storage, but also have the lowest sound quality of the three types of ringtones available. However, because they have been around the longest, the selection of sounds or music available is typically very large, and as an added benefit, monotones typically require very little storage on your cell phone or mobile device.
Polyphonic ringtones, or polytones, are similar to monotones but support playing more than one note at the same time, allowing for the creation of tones that are more complex and of significantly improved quality over monotones. Still compact in size, polytones are often in the MIDI format, and because of their widespread availability and device compatibility polytones currently enjoy the greatest popularity of any of the three types of ringtones.
